LAURA REID HARRIS, PSYD

Doctor of Clinical Psychology

Welcome to Alviva! I’m glad you’re here and hope that I can serve as a good match for you and your therapy goals. I provide individual therapy and psychological assessment to older adolescents and adults in both English and Spanish. I am licensed in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Colorado, and New Mexico, and I am a member of PSYPACT (find out more about that here), which allows me to see folks in 40 participating states.

I received my doctorate from The George Washington University in 2017. During my time as a doctoral student, I worked in community mental health settings, counseling centers, and in forensics/psychological testing. As an extern, I worked for a year with the transgender community at an LGBT youth center dedicated to providing medical services and support to Spanish-speaking folks seeking refuge in the United States from persecution related to their identities. I completed my internship at the University of Virginia and did a summer rotation at the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy. Following my graduation, I returned to Washington to complete a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at The George Washington University.

Prior to becoming a psychologist, I obtained an MA in Hispanic Linguistics at Indiana University and received my BA from Middlebury College in Psychology, Spanish, and German. I speak both English and Spanish fluently and have some fluency in French, German, and Portuguese. I’ve also studied Turkish, Arabic, and Hebrew.

Having lived in several countries, I wanted to combine my love of languages and cultures with psychology. One of my specialties is treating individuals whose first language is not English and who are embarking on therapy in a non-native language.

I have experience treating patients and/or supervising clinicians from Africa, East Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North America, and South Asia. I welcome all discussions of race, class, culture, religion, sexual identity, sexual orientation, and other forms of identity to understand how these factors influence the therapeutic relationship and treatment.
